I think you mean AIFS? I believe AFS is solely a volunteer organization. Anyways I'm graduating from high school this year and I'm studying abroad for a 3-6 months in a year or two. I think it would be better to study abroad after you graduated high school. The reasons being because it is around $15000 for only 3 months therefore your last year of high school is going to be about 10 months. Also wouldn't you rather study abroad for a program you're interested in, like for me I'm going to study abroad in Italy for international business, art history and photography. But there are other organizations like CEA, which is the the most inexpensive one I've seen. Anyways I know I didn't answer you're question but just look into other organizations. Also sometimes they grant scholorships.

I did a one year exchange with AFS in Austria in 2005/2006. I have lived in Italy for 4 years as well. It really depends on what you want out of the exchange. My best year of my entire life was my year in Austria with AFS. AFS is very expensive, but I was totally satisfied. The AFS camps were a blast. If you want to have an amazing time, go to Austria! Austria is one of the cleanest countries in the world. The safest country in Europe. Great Culture, great food and beer. BEAUTIFUL landscape and archeticture, open minded and welcoming people. And great nightlife. Public transportation in Austria is one of the best in the world. Get anywhere, anytime without a car! Most people speak english which can be good and bad. It will be harder for you to learn German because everyone will want to speak english to you. Italy you'll learn Italian probably faster since less people speak english like they do in Austria. Austria also has 7 bordering countries to visit!!! I promise you, you will not be disappointed!
